Safe Sanctuary

Charity United Methodist Church (CUMC), through this Policy, strives to provide a safe, secure environment to teach and care for the children and youth who participate in our programs and sponsored activities.

When children and youth are present in CUMC programs or activities where their parents are not present, volunteers and/or staff function as loco parentis, Latin for "in the place of a parent” and have the legal responsibility to take on some of the functions and responsibilities of a parent.  Opportunities for abuse and neglect are minimized by providing proper enlistment, training, and supervision of persons working with children and youth.

This procedure applies to adults and youth who wish to volunteer and includes anyone who drives a church vehicle.  If you are unsure if you've already completed this training or if your certification is current, please contact the church office 757-426-7296 or charityumc@gmail.com.

Safe Sanctuary Policy

If you would like to help with Children's Ministry (Sunday School, VBS, Youth Group or other special events) you'll need to complete the following steps:

  1. Register to attend a training session and turn in the following forms (completed) at the training.
    1. Forms needed for training_5 pages
  2. Have your picture taken for a name badge.
  3. Repeat the process every three years, if you wish to continue serving with children.
We will process your background check and once complete and approved, print your photo name badge and attach a green lanyard, which indicates you're approved to work with children.  Volunteers under 18 will receive a red lanyard since we can't run a background check on minors.  Three months before your certification expires, you'll receive an email reminder to attend another training.
